Term 4 Week 8 2024
Welbourn Tumuaki Appointment
The Welbourn School Board is delighted to announce that Bonnie Mills has been
appointed as our new Tumuaki | Principal, commencing term 1 2025.
Bonnie is currently the co-leader; Deputy Principal and SENCO at Frankley School. Bonnie impressed us with her proven successes in improving student outcomes, providing strong pastoral care, hauora and well-being support, experience in developing and leading collaborative teams, leading complex change, honouring Te Tiriti and expertise in leading and facilitating adult learning. Above all this, Bonnie is a highly professional individual, who leads with manaaki and will be able to form strong connections with all members of our school community.
Before her career in education, she was a member of the Royal New Zealand Navy. Her time there was instrumental in grounding her with a great skill set transferable to school leadership as well as a deep understanding and empathy for people from a range of cultures and diverse backgrounds. Bonnie is married to Toby and has three sons, Josh, Ryan and Ben.
Bonnie is excited, energised and more than ready to step into the role of Tumuaki | Principal at Welbourn School and lead us through an exciting new season. (We have also heard that she makes a great cheese roll!).
The appointment committee was composed of Board members; Alistair Simmers, Kathryn Irving, Anthony Roebuck, Hamish Bracegirdle and Jenny Dryden (Staff Representative) as well as Associate Principal, Patricia Gibson. We were supported throughout the process by an external education consultant. The appointment process was very thorough and considered and the committee is confident that we have a new Tumuaki | Principal who is an outstanding educational leader and is the right fit for our school. We look forward to welcoming Bonnie in 2025.
We now look ahead to saying farewell and acknowledging John Carr for all he has done for our school in his 23 years at Welbourn. He has paved the way for new leadership to be able to step into an amazing school with supportive whānau, highly professional, well-regarded staff and incredible learners.
He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata! He tangata! He tangata!
What is the most important thing in the world? It is people! It is people! It is people!
Ngā mihi nui,
Alistair Simmers
Presiding Member, Welbourn School Board
Staff vs Students Basketball
On Tuesday the staff took on our Y6 Champion Basketball team in a fun lunchtime match. The staff put in all their pocket money to buy the services of guest 'Airs" player (Mr Carr's son) Jake for the match. It was an entertaining game, with the staff managing to secure the win. The Welbourn student crowd were divided in their support, so both teams were being cheered on. Thanks to Jake's wardrobe the staff were the best dressed team!
Christmas Disco Fun !
Today, we took time out of our class routines to get into the Christmas spirit. Our Student Council organised our two Christmas discos; one for the Te Hēnui team and one for our Huatoki team. The music and dancing was just what we needed on a wet Thursday in week 8 . There were many fabulous Christmas costumes on display, but we had to choose some winners. Our winners were Finn, Abigail, Konnah and Thea. Our best dancers were : Zoe S, Jayden, Emily F and Dylan R ( who was missing in action for the photo). We had a game of musical statues won by Jack and Seazon. Finally spin the bottle was won by Harper, Montana and Vie. Congratulations everyone ! And thank you to our Student Council for a well planned and executed event. It was wonderful!
